Indexes
Wang: The Bell and the Drum

Chinese Bell

This index is limited to discussions which are extensive enough to include a portion of the poem text. Wang adheres to the oral-formulaic faith. Shr poems which for some observers are problematic in being tissues of line overlap with other Shr poems, are for him typical examples of "formulaic composition by themes" (p128). Whether or not this makes sense (on which see Brooks, Some Common Lines in the Shr, WSP v2), the poems in question need scrutiny before any satisfactory account of the Shr can be reached. The distribution of extensively discussed Shr poems in this work may be compared with that in Granet or in Saussy. Poems with an atypically large number of common lines are marked in the list below by an asterisk.
