Chu
The original language of the Chu state was not a dialect of Chinese; it was unrelated and non-Sinitic. It has left few traces behind it, having been increasingly replaced for elite purposes as a result of assimilation in the pre-Imperial period, and having had its political base destroyed in the Wars of Unification. Some of the traces are gathered together in this section.
